OpenAI Unveils GPT Store, Empowering Developers to Explore and Share Custom Chatbot Apps

OpenAI has officially launched the GPT Store, providing developers with a marketplace to explore and share custom chatbot applications powered by the company's advanced AI models such as GPT-4 and DALL-E 3. The GPT Store is seamlessly integrated into the ChatGPT client on the web, accessible through a dedicated tab, and caters to users subscribed to premium ChatGPT plans, including ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the newly introduced ChatGPT Team.

Incorporating a diverse range of GPTs developed by OpenAI's partners and the broader developer community, the GPT Store offers a user-friendly experience, allowing developers to browse popular and trending GPTs on the community leaderboard. Categories such as lifestyle, writing, research, programming, and education organize the GPTs, offering users a curated selection based on their interests and needs.

To streamline the GPT development process, OpenAI introduced the GPT Builder tool, enabling developers to create chatbots without extensive coding expertise. With plain language input, developers can specify the desired capabilities of their GPTs, ranging from simple tasks to more complex functionalities.

Several GPTs are already available in the GPT Store, including a trail recommender from AllTrails, a code tutor from Khan Academy, and a content designer from Canva. Notably, these GPTs are currently offered for free, setting the stage for the introduction of a revenue program for GPT builders in Q1.

Developers interested in listing their GPTs on the GPT Store must verify their user profiles and submit their creations to OpenAI's new review system. This system, employing a combination of human and automated review processes, ensures that GPTs adhere to OpenAI's terms of use. OpenAI has also outlined plans to launch a GPT builder revenue program, providing compensation for U.S. builders based on user engagement with their GPTs.

While the GPT Store empowers developers to explore and share innovative chatbot applications, it also raises questions about the human element in the review process. OpenAI has yet to provide details on the compensation and well-being of the individuals involved in reviewing GPTs, a topic that holds significance given past concerns regarding the working conditions of AI moderators.

The GPT Store represents a significant step in democratizing generative AI app creation, potentially reshaping the landscape for consultancy firms focused on building similar applications. As the GPT Store evolves and developers continue to contribute to the platform, the impact on the broader AI development community will become more apparent.
